The 35th and McRae Road Improvement project  began in the fall of 2004.  Since then
neighborhood residents, including the grassroots group “Neighbors for a Safe Community” and
the Municipality of Anchorage, have been working together to reach agreement on various elements of the road improvements.  Presented below is a summary everyone's hard work.

MOA Letter of Agreement

Road Width:  The total road width measures 31 feet back-of-curb to back-of-curb except for the section from Turnagain to Vintage where it narrows to 28-feet.   The road will have two 10-foot wide lanes, plus shoulders, curb and gutter, and striping.

Speed Limit:   The posted speed will be 25 mph.

Trails and Sidewalks:  A continous 6-foot wide asphalt path will parallel the north side of the road.  There will be a 2-foot wide patterned concrete buffer between the path and the curb/road.  Midblock pedestrian crossings at Fish Creek Trail and the Boys and Girls Club trail will have flashing crossing lights.

Traffic Calming:  To discourage speeding, chokers, raised intersections, chicanes (a shift in the road alignment), variable speed compliance signs, colored crosswalks, and gateway treatments will be used.

Trees:  A professional arborist will work with the contractor during construction to minimize damage to older, high value trees including the five large Spruce trees between Vintage Circle and Turnagain Drive.  Since the root systems of some of the trees extend into the existing roadway footprint, there may be some unavoidable damage or losses.  Some trees will also have to be removed to provide for a safe road and sight distances.   It should also be noted that new landscaping and trees will also be added whereever feasible.

Parking: On-street parking will be provided where safe and practical generally on the south side of the road in the area between Barbara Drive and Arkansas Drive and just east of Northwood Drive.

Fish Creek:   As part of a community wide effort to restore the health of Fish Creek, the road crossing at Fish creek will be realigned to reduce flooding, maintenance costs, and improve water quality and natural habitat.
